Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report early analysis show the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A high-ranking political figure commented the incident made him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
