The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
